Class Descriptions

“Design it Yourself (DIY)"

Class Series

This series offers students the opportunity to learn how to create their own designs by discussing the construction, styles, yarn selection, and techniques for a specific type of project. This is a unique class series focusing on the design of knit accessories, giving students the knowledge and confidence to later tackle a larger project such as a sweater.

These classes are designed to be either 3 or 6-hour classes, except for the DIY-Shawls class which is a 6-hour class.

Design It Yourself (DIY): Hats

“DIY — Hats!” will help you design and make a custom knit hat. We’ll discuss the construction of hoods, beanies, tuques, slouches, berets, newsboy hats, cloches, chullos, and more. Discover what styles flatter different faces, and learn what yarns, patterns, and construction techniques work best for each style. Acquire knowledge of different types of shaping, how to plan a perfect fit, how to calculate crown shaping, and investigate accents and embellishments. Through discussion, creative exploration, and intervals of knitting, you will not only design a hat, but be well on your way to completing your project. Discover the fun of designing it yourself, and feel confident in your newfound abilities to design your own hat!

Design It Yourself (DIY): Cowls

“DIY — Cowls!” will help you design and make a cowl or infinity scarf. We’ll discuss the construction of cowls, infinity scarves, gaiters, and snoods. Discover what yarns and patterns work best for different stitch patterns, and construction techniques for creating the knitted loop including a provisional cast on, Kitchener stitch, and knitting in the round. Acquire knowledge of different types of shaping, knitting flat vs. in the round, how to plan a perfect fit, how to calculate pattern repeats, and investigate accents and embellishments. Through discussion, creative exploration, and intervals of knitting, you will not only design a neckpiece, but be well on your way to completing your project. Discover the fun of designing it yourself, and feel confident in your newfound abilities to design your own cowl!

Design It Yourself (DIY): Mitts

“DIY — Mitts!” will help you design and make custom knit fingerless mitts or mittens. We’ll discuss the construction of fingerless mitts, classic mittens, and flip-top mittens. Discover what yarns, patterns, and construction techniques work best for each style. Acquire knowledge of different types of shaping, how to plan a perfect fit, how to calculate thumb gussets and cuffs, and investigate accents and embellishments. Through discussion, creative exploration, and intervals of knitting, you will not only design fingerless mitts or mittens, but be well on your way to completing your project. Discover the fun of designing it yourself, and feel confident in your newfound abilities to design your own mitts!

Design It Yourself (DIY): Crescent Shawl

“DIY — Crescent Shawl!” will help you design and make your own crescent shawl. We’ll discuss the various shapes and construction of shawls, and discover what yarns, patterns, and techniques work best for this type of shaping. We’ll discuss lace borders, calculate the math for the border and short row shaping.Through discussion, creative exploration, and intervals of knitting, you will create swatches and have your new shawl designed by the end of class! Discover the fun of designing it yourself, and feel confident in your newfound abilities to design your crescent shawl!

“Adventures in ..."

Class Series

This series of classes is an adventure to explore a particular technique. Students learn how each pattern is created, how to understand the “knitting language” in the pattern, how to identify and fix mistakes, and how to modify or create their own version of the pattern or technique. All classes include a project designed by Lisa M. Barnes, and students start the project during class.

These classes are all 3-hour classes.

ADVENTURES IN Mosaic Knitting

Learn how to work mosaic knitting patterns while creating mosaic fingerless mitts. Discover what comprises mosaic patterns, and how to read mosaic patterns and charts. By the end of class, you will be well on your way to completing your mosaic mitts project and have the confidence to tackle any mosaic knitting project!

ADVENTURES IN Reversible Cables

Do you love to make cabled projects, but wish the back side looked as nice as the front side? Well, now they can, when you learn how to make reversible cables! You will discover how reversible cables are created, explore the different types of reversible cables, and learn how to plan reversible cables in your own project. By the end of class, you will be well on your way to completing your cabled headband project, and have the confidence to create your own reversible projects!

ADVENTURES IN I-CORD

Learn all about i-cord while creating an i-cord necklace. I-cord stands for “Idiot Cord” because it’s so easy! Discover how to make an i-cord in various diameters, as a cast on, a bind off, and edging, and a stand alone cord. By the end of class, you will be well on your way to completing your i-cord necklace and have the confidence to make other i-cord projects on your own!

ADVENTURES IN Lace

Learn all about making lace patterns while creating a lace sampler scarf. Explore the techniques used to create lace, learn how and why different increases and decreases create unique lace patterns, and how to read lace patterns and charts (including more complicated patterns that change stitch counts). By the end of class, you will be well on your way to completing your lace scarf and have the confidence to tackle other lace projects on your own!

ADVENTURES IN ARM KNITTING 1 & 2

Learn how to knit using your arms as knitting needles! This popular technique is so quick and easy, you can make knit projects in very little time, with no prior knitting experience. Discover how combining different types and weights of yarn and other materials affect your project, and experiment with techniques to create your own unique accessory!

In Class 2, you will learn how to execute more advanced techniques, including how to make the traditional “purl” stitch and increasing and decreasing, to make a lacy wrap.
